How Should You Respond to an All-Around Tough Day at Work?

Let’s face it, no matter who you are, or how much you may love your job, at some point in time you will have a bad day at work. If it is a particularly severe experience, you may sink into a funk as a result of the challenging day. It would help if you bounced back with practical ways of dealing with a bad day at work.

Do Not Take it Personally

Did the boss yell at you for no reason? Let it go. Nobody likes receiving a tongue lashing at work, especially if it involves something they did not do. Do not take these people to heart. Instead, stay professional and shrug it off. If you have a co-worker who is angry, upset, stressed, or even mean, do not internalize their actions and behavior. Don’t bottle your feelings up. Let them go.

Do Something Nice for Yourself

Dispense the lousy day by seeking things that make you feel happy and confident. It could be vigorous exercise when you get home, reading that new bestseller you have wanted to read, or perhaps a glass of wine. However, make sure your diversions are healthy pursuits. Excessive indulgence on food, alcohol, or binge television won’t help you recover and may make the situation worse. Sedation will keep you disengaged instead of building your spirits up.

Venting May Help

Scream over it, write about it or speak to that understanding friend. Just get it out of your system, and the sooner, the better. A good rant is genuinely one of the best ways to cope with a bad day. It is vital to get your feelings out, but please do put a time limit or your complaining. Let it go for 10 minutes and then move on to something fun.

Step Back and Evaluate

Now it is time to stop and think. Do you even know the reason the day is bad? Have you considered the facts regarding the situation? Take time to run it through your head and evaluate it before moving on. When you find the reason for the bad day, you will then be able to cope with it accordingly. Discovering what is behind the bad day will help you handle it much better. Furthermore, you will have a better understanding of the problem, allowing you to avoid being in this situation again. Become proactive, and you can prevent the bad day in the first place.
